Description
Aspartame is a low-calorie artificial sweetener commonly used as a sugar substitute in foods and beverages. Approximately 200 times sweeter than sucrose, it is chemically defined as the methyl ester of the dipeptide comprising aspartic acid and phenylalanine. Discovered in 1965, aspartame was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1974 and re-approved in 1981 after its initial approval was briefly revoked. Aspartame is one of the most studied food additives in the human food supply.
Key Advantages
Proven Safety
Approved as safe by leading health authorities, including the WHO, FDA, EFSA, JECFA, and permitted for use in over 135 countries worldwide.
Sugar-Like Taste
Provides a clean, sweet taste profile nearly identical to sucrose, with no unpleasant aftertaste.
High Sweetness Intensity
Approximately 200 times sweeter than sucrose.
Zero-Calorie & Zero Glycemic Impact
No caloric content and a Glycemic Index (GI) of 0, making it ideal for sugar-free diets.
Non-Metabolized
Not absorbed or broken down by the body, ensuring no effect on blood sugar levels.
Cost-Effective
Offers significant cost savings in food production when used as a sucrose replacement due to its high sweetness potency.
